Born in Nierstein am Ruhr (Germany). Son of Heinrich Leip (farmer) and Maria Naab, both deceased at the time of Phillip's arrest.

Engineer by education.

Married with Johanne Marie Matchinsky (then 27 years) in Amsterdam on 9 July 1913, (reg nr. 526). Living in Batavia (1948).

Father of Johanne was August Matschinsky (blacksmith), mother of Johanne: Johanne Dorothee Frehde, both living in Brunswijk (Dl).

Left for NEI on 28 July 1913, just after marrying. Phillipp was perhaps temporarily working as a cook on the ss Essen (HAPAG). Last address in NEI: Solo (Klaten, Jogyakarta).
