Heldt's name name is often confused with dr Heidt who was also a survivor and escaped the disaster in the same life boat as dr. Heidt.
From available documents it is not clear yet whether H P Heldt was a medical practitioner or an officer on the ss Rheinland, or both.
On arrival in Nias, Heldt suffers from malaria and a serious eye disease. He has trouble trekking over the inland with the other survivors in his group, to search for shelter and food. However, he was well assisted by his comrades.
