Born in Sternberg in Germany son of Edmund Nowak and Theresa NN, both deceased at the time of the the Van Imhoff disaster. He married Maria Magdalena Kissling living in Basel (?)

During the disaster, Edmund was seen by survivor and witness Ernst Fischer. Edmund is holding on to a floating improvised raft which is attached to a life boat. On this raft are also prof F L Huber, ir P Danzmann, Karl Seemann and K Raschdorf. When the rope breaks (or is detached) only Danzmann and Seemann can still reach the lifeboat which is rapidly gaining speed. The others on the raft remain immobile, in shock and disappear out of sight.
