Gundert's name is mentioned in a personal letter of NEI District Officer (Ambtenaar Binnenlands Bestuur) J. J. Van der Velde who was in charge of the round-up of suspicious persons in his area of authority in North Sumatra. In his letter, Van der Velde wrote that he did not feel sorry for the two "Nazi doctors" he had to arrest but regretted the fate of planter Heinrich Gundert whom he knew as an ant-nazi and innocent man. But, he considered, ëxceptions could not be made".
